Screening strategies should be led by the initial confirmation that extracts have pharmacological activity at some level in the human disease and a clear absence of acute adverse events. Confirmation of such safety and efficacy from more than one study and community would be an advantage. Such a scheme would focus natural products research, prioritising those with confirmed activity in man. This process is an updated version of Yu Yunxiu’s 1952 doa-xing-ni-shi (acting in the reversed order) or 54321 [25]
