In panel A (Patient 1), occasional mature forms of P. falciparum were seen (Giemsa, magnification × 400). In panel B (Patient 2), malaria pigment and numerous P. falciparum trophozoites and schizonts are visible within the microvasculature (Giemsa, magnification x400). In panel C (Patient 3), there is acute chromatolysis of neurons and early infiltration by neutrophils from adjacent vessels at the edge of an area of infarction.
