Schematic diagram of the isoprenoid biosynthesis and downstream products in Plasmodium falciparum . Bisphosphonates are known to inhibit FPPS/GGPPS, thereby preventing the synthesis of FPP and GGPP required for the biosynthesis of ubiquinone, dolichol, carotenoids, menaquinone, tocopherol, and protein prenylation.
