Upper line, left: The median band cell count was significantly higher in malaria patients compared to controls (P <0.001) as well as in severe malaria patients compared to uncomplicated cases (P <0.001). Upper line, right: The median neutrophil count was significantly higher in malaria patients compared to controls (P <0.001) as well as in severe malaria patients compared to uncomplicated cases (P <0.001). Lower line, left: The median lymphocyte count was significantly lower in malaria patients compared to controls (P <0.001) as well as in severe malaria patients compared to uncomplicated cases (P <0.001). Lower line, right: The median monocyte count in malaria patients was only slightly but significantly higher than in controls (P <0.001), whereas the median monocyte count in severe malaria patients was significantly decreased than in uncomplicated cases (P <0.001) and similar to controls (P = 0.729).
