Blood-stage P. falciparum parasites show different lipid pattern. Lipid fluorescent labelling of the blood-stage parasites. Fluorescence imaging of uninfected RBCs (a, d, g), trophozoite infected RBCs (b, e, h) and gametocyte infected RBCs (c, f, i) stained with 25-NBD cholesterol (to label cholesterol), LipidTOX Red (to label neutral lipids) and Nile Red (to label polar lipids) was performed on a DeltaVision Elite microscope (Applied Precision) at the same fluorescent recording setting. uRBC uninfected red blood cells, BF bright field.
