  1. aIn the group of patients treated with quinine sulphate, the average parasite clearance time was determined in 16 patients. In the remainder (n = 18) daily smears were not carried out. The variables gender, origin, type of traveller, haemoglobin (basal levels, 7 and 28 days) and parasitaemia level follow a normal distribution. The quantitative variables that do not follow a normal distribution pattern are age, platelets, length of hospital stay and parasite clearance time
