Co-cultures of B-cells and P. falciparum. a The addition of CD40L or IL2/4 or staining of RBCs with CFDA did not have any major impact on the percentage of parasites in the co-culture. When Parasites + Unstained RBC were compared to the other culture conditions, at day 10 there were significant differences for Parasites + B-cells (p < 0.0001), Parasites + B-cells + CD40L (p = 0.02) and Parasites + B-cells + CD40L + IL2/4 (p = 0.01). b The presence of CESS- or buffy-coat-derived B-cells led to a similar increase in the percentage of parasites in co-cultures (mean of 3 experiments). Error bars indicate SEM. When Parasites were compared to other culture conditions, at day 10 there were significant differences for Parasites + B-cells (p < 0.0001) and for Parasites + CESS (p = 0.002)
