  2. *There were 23 patients with baseline haemoglobin of < 70 g/L (range 45-69 g/L, mean 65 g/L). This occurred because at some sites screening haemoglobin level was determined using a rapid test (Haemacue, Downfield, UK), with subsequent checking using a coulter counter the results of which are reported here.
