Sorbitol transport in Plasmodium falciparum -infected and uninfected human erythrocytes in the presence or absence of NPPB. Uptake of 10 mM [3H]-sorbitol into uninfected erythrocytes (open circles) and into Percoll-enriched Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes in the presence (solid triangles) or absence (solid squares) of 300 μM NPPB was determined over a period of five minutes as indicated. Inset: Inhibition of 10 mM [3H]-sorbitol (expressed as pmol(107 cells)-1s-1) into Percoll-enriched P. falciparum-infected erythrocytes by various concentrations of NPPB as indicated. All data shown are the average of triplicate determinations. Error bars represent SEM; where not shown, bars fall within the symbol.
