For a–c, the Mann–Whitney test was used to assess statistical significance between control and experimental groups; a P value of  < 0.05 was considered statisticaly significant. For d each value for the LVP group was converted into an expected value based on the assumption of a reduction in hatch rates of 25% due to the inviability of SGS1Δ25 homozygotes. All three groups were compared with a one way ANOVA (P < 0.00001), with the Kruskal–Wallis test applied to find differences between groups. P-value indicates the comparison between SGS1ko expected (exp) and observed (obs) groups. Horizontal bars represent the median value; each experiment was performed four times, with the combined aggregated data shown
