A, C Represent violin plots of the distributions across individuals of respectively the log10 daily parasitaemia and log10 daily gametocytaemia across all individuals, aggregated across 30 day periods for compactness. Despite being log transformed, the distribution shapes appear to shift down with infection age but maintain the same general shape, suggesting a power-law relationship between the mean and variance of parasitaemia. Power laws are then fit to log10 transformed daily mean and variances in B and D, restricted to those above the estimated sensitivity of light microscopy (88 parasites per cmm blood)
